These are commonly called ‘desktop replacement’ laptops. They are a trade off in portability for an increase in speed, storage space and reliability. Ribbon mics can also be degraded by moisture but even more so than condenser mics.

The cheapest interface with decent preamps right now is the SSL 2+ which is surprisingly very cheap at only $279. It lacks a lot of features and expandability of some of the more expensive interfaces though. So most internal preamps in interfaces can never be as good as a high quality external preamp. However, a high quality external preamp tends to cost around $500+ per channel. So it seems quite obvious that the two preamps in a $200 interface won’t be great. The audio interface converts all incoming data from microphones and connected audio devices to data.

API invented the 500 series which uses the exact same modules in their desks but in a freestanding small form factor. Eventually other manufactures starting making their own modules and chassis and there were a massive demand for 500 series units and racks. Hold off on buying that piece of gear you think you need. Buy it if or when you ever make a good mix with what you have. Once you have that, you’re not upgrading, you’re usually just buying stuff you don’t need because you haven’t learnt to use what you have. It doesn’t have all the fancy software control the Komplete Kontrol has but it has wooden keys that feel like a real grand piano.

When I say it’s long, I mean super long, bigger than my …. Feel free to skip parts that you’re too lazy to do. Bookmark it, share it, it’s crazy long and detailed. It is very beneficial to orient on holidays and change your props according to them.
How to Make a Cheap Recording Studio
Invest in one that telescopes and adjusts well so you can place it at the perfect level for your voice, whether you’re standing or seated, and for any instruments. Whether the acoustics of your recording and mix room is an artistic choice or borne out of necessity, there’s plenty of optimizations you can make to improve room acoustics. Most DAWs come with a capable set of built-in plugins that are more than enough to create a professional sounding track. Check out our guide to the best studio monitors to find your perfect pair. We put together the ultimate list of the 52 best audio interfaces and a detailed guide to picking the right one so you can find your perfect audio interface.
If you’ve already furnished the room, you’ll be busy moving everything around while you do this and it may mean rewiring the whole studio as a result. Most musicians in the US move to big cities like LA and NY. Unfortunately, most apartments are made out of drywall and have windows that are close to your neighbors windows, letting all the sounds escape your studio.
STEP 2. Attach the Background to the Wall/Ceiling
Every time we record, we want it to sound the same each and every time. So follow these instructions and you’ll learn how to build a studio in your room / cupboard / basement / anywhere you need it to go really. Preferably one that blends well with the overall décor of the room. The desk should offer adequate surface area, enough to accommodate all the equipment you have.

Widely available acoustic foam is also useful to control reflections of higher frequencies. A workhorse would be dynamic mics like Shure SM57, SM58, or Audio Technica AT202. These are tried and tested classics that yield good results with practically anything you throw at them. Building a custom PC by sourcing individual parts gives you multiple options. It works out cheaper than buying pre-built systems.
Of all the equipment you need for a home recording studio, the DAW is an absolute must-have. This “app” will allow you to record and use virtual instruments, and it is vital for mixing. Some industry standards include Avid’s Pro Tools that would enable for complex mixing and manipulation as well as routing.
Don’t forget a comfortable chair for playing music or singing, and a couch or even bean bags for relaxing while listening to music. Use area rugs under vibrating instruments like drum kits to muffle some of the sounds. You can invest in gear like the Yeti Nano microphone, a pop filter, a tripod to rest your camera or mobile phone on, and lastly a ring light to amp up your production value. Instead of converting a whole space into a recording area, they have simply found an isolated corner and done some home studio soundprooing on the back wall with acoustic foam. The fact of the matter is, that while there’s good rules to follow and things you need to achieve, there are a thousand ways to adapt parts of your house into a homemade recording studio.
The exterior build quality of the ML-1 vintage is insane and is about the same as you get on a Neumann or Telefunken U67. The extra mic emulations in the vintage edition make it worth the extra cost to me alone. It is fairly flat and neutral but comes with software to change it’s tone to emulate lots of different microphones. You don’t need to buy the DSP plugins individually, they give you all of their plugins upfront included in the hardware purchase price, saving you lots of money. That makes it the cheapest desktop interface for both Mac and PC for serious sound engineering and mastering as the sound is much more open and clearer than the Apollo Twin in my opinion. The Apollo Twin is darker with less treble and less detail whereas the Apogee Duet sounds much brighter and more open for monitoring .

However, if you’re a mix engineer and you just want a simple high quality bus powered USB interface for mixing that you can also take around with you to other studios, it’s a good choice. It’s also why I have it in addition to the Apollo Twin. Although you can setup a Talkback in your DAW from any mic input and enabling monitoring on the channel, turning it on and off can be difficult. Even with a control surface, if you turn it on, your speakers will feedback if you’re not using headphones instead.
Ensure one of those area rugs is directly under your desk and chair. If your room already has wall-to-wall carpet, you can skip this step. If you don't feel like outfitting each component with a separate mic, take one mic and position it a few feet above the center of the kit. No pop filter is needed but make sure to face the mic’s recording side down.

It uses the same high quality Apogee converters used in professional recording studios in Apogee’s more expensive interfaces. Purchase acoustic treatment material to reduce sound reflection. Purchase a broadband absorption kit, four bass traps, and two isolation pads from a music store or online. The broadband absorption kit should come with approximately 30 panels that can be placed around your room, once the equipment is set up.
It starts with an honest assessment of the critical components in your workflow. Outline your needs, shortlist a few different options, and get your money’s worth from everything you buy. Be sure to invest in a few power strips and extension cords because you’ll be hooking up lots of lights, computer, chargers, and even fans. You may also want a step ladder handy for when changing the point of view on a person or object. It also comes in handy for changing backdrops or the settings on tall lights. Position your monitors ideally at ear level, on either side of your computer, and carefully read the instructions that come with your monitor speakers.
